PROJECT: Walk This Way Pedestrian Bridge Competition

LOCATION: Charleston, South Carolina

AWARD: 2nd Place - AIA Charleston Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition

ROLE: Bridge Architect

YEAR: 2014

The concept for the pedestrian bridge rejuvenation stemmed from the crosswalk which serves as an identifiable marker for pedestrian crossings. As pedestrians, we identify the crosswalk as a safe means of passage. By orientating the crosswalk vertically, the visibility of the symbol is increased tenfold allowing pedestrians around the area to identify the new bridge as a safe crossing. With the addition of the new panels, this “new” bridge would entice people from all sides of the “Great Divide" through curiosity and visibility.

Simplicity and feasibility were also key factors in the design. The goal was to modify the bridge without any major changes which was achieved by replacing the existing railing. This minimal cost upgrade provided an improvement that was feasible and generated a tremendous positive impact. Safety was enhanced for nighttime users by updating the existing two light pole design to a bright white gateway that invites people and provides feel safe and secure passage.
